Trippy Trees
Recently, I have been trying a fun trick that the famous Uncle Robert showed me. I have been using long exposures and camera movement to create strange abstract images. This is one of my attempts. I zoomed in on some tree branches and moved my camera down after pressing the shutter.
Because the highest f-stop my camera is capable of is f/8.0, I cannot use as slow a shutter speed as I would like. I also have to find very dark conditions for this effect. Even then, the image is always in need of some serious tweaking in Photoshop. This photo was duplicated on top of itself seven times, each with the blending mode set to 'multiply'. I like the result. What do you think?

I wanted to answer your question about how I got away without post processing the shot from today.
I use a polarizing filter on my lenses. It's a must for those blue skies. If you look at some of my earlier pre-polarizer shots, you can really see the difference. (It's a great help if you can try to keep the sun over your left shoulder, but at least behind you too. It's not always possible, but it helps.)
The other thing I do is use exposure compensation, either by spot metering it or using the manual settings, depending on the circumstance. If I am shooting a lot of things with the same lighting and contrast issues, I will use the EV step settings to either under or over expose the shot to achieve the right balance. I use spot metering when I am taking a lot of shots that have all different lighting and contrast issues. Spot metering is very useful for that type of shot.
My ineptness and fear of Photoshop has forced me to really learn my camera settings and how to use them well.
Sometimes when I have a shot that I really like before post processing, I will grow to dislike when I do try to post process it. I hate when that happens.
Anyway, That's basically it in a nutshell.

Oops, I am tired, when I said spot metering I should have included AEL (automatic exposure lock, after metering an area in the shot to get the best balance in your exposure).
For example if you have a high contrast shot, find the medium ground, use the spot meter and AEL to set the proper exposure. Reframe the shot and take it. Important info I left out...sorry, it's after 1 AM here. I should go to sleep now.

just place anything on your scanner with the cover open to achiever the black b/ground..if you want to play with movement, then take the subject , follow the sencor, you'll see some pretty interesitng eefects! ..or google for scanner-graphhy ;)

Hey thanks for the comment on my blog - you could also try using a zoom lense and drawing it back into itself. I love that effect -(radial blur) I've tried it with a girl in a field cupping her hands as if to shout. It came out nicely - but these days I prefer to take a normal photo and do whatever in photoshop. But love the colours and the idea. You're fantastic.
